The Space Vehicles Directorate's Integrated Experiments Division, AFRL/RVE seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-II/DR-III General Engineer or Physical Scientist at Kirtland AFB, NM. The incumbent will serve as the Space Gateway Architect for the RAPID laboratory. RAPID conducts experimentation in support of the Space Warfighting Analysis Center (SWAC), which creates future Force Designs for the USSF.  By performing technology characterization, maturation and demonstration, RAPID enables next-generation space capabilities for the joint force. RAPID’s experimentation in Space Data Transport includes the development, launch and operation of a network traffic gateway spacecraft securely connecting disparate networks as part of a hybrid space architecture.  The Space Gateway Architect is the primary technical focal point within RAPID for the Space Gateway, representing the technical and experimentation requirements to external stakeholders and ensuring they are met.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Formulates experimental objectives and functional requirements relating to the Space Gateway as an element of the overall RAPID experimentation and technology transition plans.

  • Contributes to vehicle and payload conceptual designs and analyses for the Space Gateway

  • Develops a concept of operations for the Space Gateway to contribute to the overall RAPID experimental plan and to build upon related DoD space networking investments.

  • Serves as liaison to the Space Gateway Program Management Office (PMO), representing the technical and experimentation requirements.

  • Assesses technology, cost, and risk trades in the context of the Space Gateway concept of operations and the overall RAPID experiment plan; recommends courses of action to the Space Gateway PMO and RAPID

  • Participates in space vehicle and payload contract development, source selection, milestone reviews, decision meetings, and technical progress updates; reviews documentation and deliverables; manages related contracts as required.

  • Leads on-orbit experimentation utilizing the Space Gateway

  • Creates, edits, and presents reports and briefings relating to the technical aspects of the Space Gateway experiments to internal and external stakeholders, including the Space Experiments Review Board, the Space Warfighting Analysis Center, Space Systems Command, and mission partners.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship

  • An active TS security clearance with eligibility for SCI and the ability to maintain it.

  • A bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

  • Ability to travel as required to perform duties.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • An active TS security clearance with eligibility for SCI and the ability to maintain it

  • Background in computer networking, secure computing, and/or hardware development

  • Experience in Government contract development and management

  • Prior experience with an AFRL or other flight experiment, or related experience
