The Geospace Navigation Section (RVBYS) is seeking an experienced Satellite Navigation Engineer to operate, secure and manage assets to provide resilient Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) service capabilities worldwide across the full spectrum of operations in support of combatant commands, joint forces headquarters, and other organizations and agencies as directed.

Position duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research and analysis to identify emerging trends, technologies, and leading-edge solutions related to next-generation GPS, GNSS, and/or other satellite navigation technology.
  • Support engineering efforts of system integration, verification, and validation activities to ensure compliance with DoD standards and requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address potential vulnerabilities and threats to GPS, GNSS, and/or other satellite navigation technology.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in GPS, GNSS, and/or other satellite navigation technology and contribute to the development of innovative navigation solutions.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, reports, and documentation related to GPS, GNSS, and/or other satellite navigation technology.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, DoD contractors and government agencies to support system requirements and specifications of next-generation GPS, GNSS, and/or other satellite navigation technology.
  • Adhere to established processes, standards, and regulations governing satellite navigation engineering in the DoD.
  • Support engineering projects requiring navigation testing environments to include technical support for GPS and/or GNSS systems to support test objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance
  • A bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering from an accredited university 
  • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade or equivalent in other pay systems. A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a course of study that directly reflects the job-related KSAs/competencies may be used to satisfy the minimum qualifications at the DR-02/GS-12.

Desired Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in engineering, physics, or a related field
  • Experience working with or within the DoD research community
  • Experience in leading teams
  • Experience with GPS and/or GNSS (examples: experience working with SDRs, antennas, GPS/inertial integration, or applications of GPS/GNSS such as remote sensing or time transfer)
  • Experience with alternative navigation technologies, including but not limited to: space-based and terrestrial RF signals of opportunity, optical signals, inertial sensors, visual navigation, magnetic navigation, etc.
  • Experience with estimation, control, optimization, and/or data fusion algorithms, particularly with applications to navigation or orbit determination
  • Signal processing experience (navigation signals would be preferred, but experience with radar or communications signals would also be beneficial)
  • Basic knowledge of cryptography (concepts, techniques, etc.)
  • Experience working with real satellite data products (e.g. not just simulation studies) and/or experience setting up and running field data collection or demonstration activities
  • Basic systems engineering experience
  • Basic programming proficiency in a language such as Python or C++
