The Warfighter Interfaces Branch of the 711th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711 HPW/RHWIM) seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02, Human Factors Data Scientist at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.
This position supports research aims within the Human-Machine Interfaces Core Research Area. The objective is to achieve decision superiority for the warfighter by optimizing human engagement and interaction with increasingly complex, highly automated machines, and AI-enabled decision support and analysis tools. The focus is on the investigation and development of novel multisensory displays, controls, and decision aids for systems, including advanced automation, autonomous systems, AI-enabled systems, pilot vehicle interfaces, command and control systems, and other operator-centered technologies to improve warfighter performance.
Work includes:
- Applying human factors and data science methods to establish, validate, and interpret models and theories that explain the complex human computer interactions required to advance human performance through the teaming of humans and computers.
- Applying computational methods and tools to study human computer interactions, behaviors, and antecedents affecting performance and outcomes.
- Using interdisciplinary approaches to include computer science, data science, experimental psychology, cognitive science, and statistics to analyze complex human computer systems to gain a deeper understanding of human machine interaction processes and phenomenon.
- Briefing AFRL S&T leadership and broader scientific community.
- Applying computational methods and tools to study and understand data trends and the ability to convey implications to a diverse audience.
- Exploring key challenges and solutions to warfighter interactions with complex, intelligent systems ​
- Interpreting complex data sets from situationally adaptive HMI processes that reliably and effectively respond to operator state & mission context​
- Understanding data resulting from and relationships between integrated systems; including outputs from decision-aiding applications.
- Knowledge elicitation from subject matter experts and the ability to relate that information to computer engineers/programmers.
- The ability to understand and relate requirements to both internal and external partners.
- The ability to manage multiple research lines of effort simultaneously and scope projects accordingly.

- These positions may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment
- Security Clearance: This position requires possession of or the ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance
- These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions and require a Level 1 certification (Foundational). The selectees will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.
Applicants must also meet the Basic Qualification requirements for 0180 (Psychology Series), 0801 (General Engineering), 1515 (Operations Research), 1550 (Computer Science Series), 1520 (Mathematics Series) or 1530 (Statistics Series). Desired Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Assessments (KSAs):
- Minimum M.S. or preferred PhD in Psychology, Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics or related fields.
- Knowledge of and experience with human-machine automation interactions, data analytics, and user-centered interface design with the skill and ability to apply to Air Force operations missions.
- Research Design: Problem identification; ability to create methodology relevant to both the domain and applied to a military setting; stimulus creation and manipulation; data collection and analysis in a classified setting.
- Big Data Analysis: Experience combining and analyzing large structured and unstructured datasets from various sources, to uncover patterns and insights. Applying a combination of methods to analyze data, make predictions, and identify trends. Ability to verify the validity and reliability of available datasets to answer research questions at various levels of analysis.
