The Nuclear Mission Branch is seeking a highly motivated and experienced senior-level professional to serve as the branch Technical Advisor (TA). This role oversees all scientific and technical work within the branch to support next-generation capabilities in support of Nuclear Deterrence Operations (NDO), Nuclear Explosion Monitoring (NEM), and Nuclear Command, Control, and Communication (NC3).

Position duties include but are not limited to:

  • Guides the scientific and technical development approaches of the branch research portfolio currently consisting of (1) Aerothermal Dynamics, (2) Hydrodynamics and Effects, (3) Integration, Experimentation, and Evaluation, (4) Re-entry Testbed Development, (5) Guidance, Navigation, and Control, (6) Fuzing, (7) NEM, and (8) NC3. 
  • Serves as technical leader in the branch. Works with the branch chief, branch program manager, mission lead, and mission area lead to develop, coordinate, and implement applicable research strategies and initiatives for the branch to meet NDO requirements. 
  • Works closely with mission partners at Air Force Global Strike Command and the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center to capture end user and acquisition community needs, and steer branch research accordingly. 
  • Responsible for mentoring and guiding technical team leads throughout the branch as well as ensuring scientific rigor is applied to all efforts. 
  • Responsible for day-to-day technical planning and execution. 
  • Assesses and reviews branch technical efforts to ensure mission relevance, technical quality, and suitability for public release of scientific papers and documentation. 
  • Works closely with the branch chief and program manager to ensure proper resource allocation within the branch/program as necessary to achieve branch objectives. 
  • Seeks science and technology development collaborations with partners including AFOSR, OSD, AFGSC, AFNWC, other AFRL TDs, MDA, NNSA, the DOE national laboratories, and other military, government, academic, and industry partners, including international agencies and partners. 
  • Guides and assesses branch technical efforts for strategic alignment and for scientific and technical quality. 
  • Authors reports and peer-reviewed papers detailing technical work as appropriate.
  • Presents technical results both in-house and at external technical interchange meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Must possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree from an accredited academic institution and possess a minimum of one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level of the position
  • Demonstrated experience leading research efforts of complex science and technology programs or projects. 
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense research community.
  • Strong and effective communication skills, critical thinking skills and practical problem-solving
  • Ability to recognize significant research opportunities and engage multiple parties in exploring these opportunities
  • Enthusiasm to embrace new missions, improve processes and self-educate.
  • Ability to coach and mentor early-career personnel
  • Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a DOD TS/SCI clearance

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in a relevant science or engineering field.
  • 10 or more years experience guiding research efforts for relevant high-consequence operational environments
  • Experience in the nuclear weapons enterprise, including research, development, acquisition, or operations. 
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary programs and leading teams of researchers with diverse expertise.
  • Familiarity with basic principles associated with the design, development, qualification, certification, assembly, production, surveillance, and/or testing of nuclear components or systems
  • Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities
