The AFRL Information Technology Directorate, AFRL/RI seeks to hire a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in Rome, New York. The incumbent is responsible for the safe conduct all flight operations.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
Acts as a key interface to higher-level leadership for the approval of flight tests. Reviews flight safety plans/programs and reviews local directives and procedures establishing technical and administrative safety and occupational health requirements for flight safety activities.
Performs duties required as Safety Review Board President as part of the AFRL Test Management process.
Manages the investigation processes. Plans and carries out formal investigations of reportable and non-reportable mishaps involving personal injury, accidents, property damage, and cases of occupational illnesses related to flight operations.
Maintains robust pool of potential members to serve on a Safety Investigation Board (SIB) for flight mishaps. Ensures the proper notification and investigation process, in accordance with AF, MAJCOM, civilian flight rules, and other regulations.
Evaluates a variety of complex, unconventional safety and occupational health problems or circumstances;
Determines risk assessment of the hazardous processes/conditions identified; and determines applicable methods and procedures for controlling or eliminating hazards.
Advises key managerial personnel of courses of actions affecting facility operations, work processes, and environmental conditions which impact on the safety and efficiency of personnel.
Develops and provides technical safety training/instruction to supervisors, employees, civilian pilots and researchers through community outreach efforts and/or safety managers on a wide range of flight-related work operations.
Maintains required course records. Compiles and analyzes mishap data, identifies trends, provides managers with data, and assists them in developing programs to reduce mishaps.

Required Qualifications

- Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance
- Employee must maintain current certifications
- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience must include experience with military flight operations, managing and conduction safety and occupational health program involving diverse ground, aviation, industrial safety, occupational activities and to provide safety advisory services to organizations.
