The Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Strategic Deterrence Science and Technology (S&T) Division has a unique career opportunity for a Laboratory Development Engineer to join the Olympus program. The Olympus program is a large-scale, multi-year effort dedicated to designing, building, and modernizing a world-class RDT&E laboratory complex at Kirtland AFB, NM. This complex, known as the Nuclear Enterprise S&T complex (NEST), is the foundation of AFRL’s strategic systems and hypersonics research.

This is an ideal position for an early career engineer or scientist who wants to help build the future of Air Force research. As a Laboratory Development Engineer, you will serve as a key technical member of the government team, assisting with the oversight of both minor and major military construction (MILCON) projects. You will work alongside senior project managers, subject-matter experts, and external partners to translate scientific and testing requirements into tangible facility designs. You will have the opportunity to influence the development of state-of-the-art facilities and ensure they are ready to meet the demanding needs of our nation's strategic deterrence mission.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the planning and development of new laboratory construction and facility modernization projects under the Olympus program.
  • Draft and co-author high-quality white papers, bullet background papers, and presentations to brief leadership and stakeholders on facility capabilities and status updates.
  • Review architectural and engineering (A&E) design drawings and specifications to ensure they meet the technical and operational requirements of the end-users.
  • Help define requirements for future laboratory expansions, including power, data, HVAC, security, and specialized equipment support.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between AFRL scientists, design engineers, and construction contractors to resolve design and integration challenges.
  • Assist in overseeing construction progress, attending site visits, and participating in project meetings to ensure compliance with design documents.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in science, engineering or mathematics.
  • Strong technical aptitude and the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a desire to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • A proactive mindset with a strong interest in facility design, construction, and project management.
  • Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a DOD TS/SCI clearance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Current Top Secret//SCI security clearance.Two (2) or more years of experience in facility engineering, construction management, or a related field.
  • Experience with military construction (MILCON) projects or working with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
  • Knowledge of ICD 705 standards and construction requirements.
