The Multi-Sensing Knowledge Branch (AFRL/RYAP), Sensors Directorate (AFRL/RY) seeks to hire a senior-level, DR-03 Supervisory Senior General Engineer (0801), Supervisory Senior General Physical Scientist (1301), Supervisory Senior Computer Scientist (1550) or Supervisory Senior Mathematician (1520) in Dayton, Ohio. The incumbent will serve as the Branch Chief for the Multi-Sensing Knowledge Branch.
 
This position is open to All Federal Civilian Employees. 
 
This position is open to candidates currently at the DR-02 (or equivalent grade) level eligible for promotion and/or current DR-03 (or equivalent grade) level candidates for reassignment.
 
Position duties include but are not limited to:
  • Serves as Branch Chief with oversight for RDT&E in multi-domain sensing autonomy (MDSA). Leads extremely complex cutting edge basic, exploratory, and advanced development research efforts to provide new techniques for behavioral and physical knowledge generation across multiple sensors, domains (air/space/cyber), and security levels to include algorithm development to help deliver the promise of multi-domain operations. 
  • Performs a broad range of multidisciplinary professional engineering/scientific/mathematical tasks focusing on technologies including sensor data fusion algorithms, fusion for synthesis, target phenomenology characterization, and denied/difficult target prosecution. 
  • Utilizes multidisciplinary professional engineering/scientific/mathematical knowledge managing a portfolio consisting of basic research, exploratory, and advanced development efforts. 
  • Defines/directs administrative policies and R&D strategy as well as business plans. Implements technical objectives through means of in-house and contracted efforts.
  • Documents branch technical progress in the Division Electronic Body of Knowledge (eBoK). 
  • Manages financial, facility, and human resources.
  • Leads or participates on various integrated product teams with oversight for developing, maintaining, and communicating state-of-the-art and art-of-the-possible in MDSA performance.
  • Primary interface with various offices to include personnel, contracting, financial, and external organizations such as DARPA & industry. 
  • Coordinates branch activity with AFRL leadership, warfighters, the acquisition, intelligence, research communities, and other R&D organizations. 
  • Transitions technology into USAF operations.
  • Responsible for recruiting/training/mentoring/maintaining an R&D team including planning and resource allocation for branch. 
  • Reviews technical publications as part of technical publication review process.

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Top Secret clearance wtih access to SCI and SAP clearance as a condition of employment.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent will be subject to random testing.
  • Applicant must be able to meet the OPM Qualification Standards of the position being filled, for any of the following Occupational Series: 0801, 1301, 1550, and 1520. Applicable Qualification Standards can be found at: 
  • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade DR-02, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes understanding and experience in the development and/or application of Al/ML and sensor fusion technology, and experience as a member of a technical team working a diverse portfolio consisting of basic research, exploratory, and advanced development efforts. 
  • Ability to mentor the junior force and motivate researchers.
  • Leadership ability to keep the division focused on the mission and customer needs.
  • This position requires teamwork, listening to diversity of thought to encourage high-risk, high reward research ideas.
  • Must be capable of understanding complex technical ideas and communicate with leadership and customers.
  • This position has been designated as a Non-Critical Acquisition Position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) requiring Engineering and Technical Management (N) Level/Tier 2 (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification. The selectee must meet or be capable of achieving acquisition certification within 60 months after assignment. This position also requires the employee to engage in acquisition continuous learning activities achieving 80 continuous learning points every 24 months. *Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on their resume.​​​​​​

  • Experience developing and maintaining close relationships with academia and other government agencies for further research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Technical writing experience.
  • Experience with development of government reference architectures, sensor fusion, data and performance models, Entity Detect/Track & ID, and information fusion.
