Serves as a modeling and simulation product development manager within the Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis (MS&A) branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory Aerospace Systems Directorate (AFRL/RQSA).

This branch creates new analytical tools, processes, and methodologies to advance the state of the art in MS&A and conducts analyses to help AF, AFRL, and RQ identify those advanced aerospace technologies and next generation concepts that will create the best value capability for the warfighter.

Primarily serves as the product development manager for the R&D portfolio, advancing the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM) within AFRL/RQSA.

AFSIM is a government-owned, DoD open source, and community-informed military simulation framework. It is primarily used by the DoD acquisition, operations analysis, and research and engineering communities. AFSIM benefits from a passionate user community with representation from all branches of the US military, other US Government agencies, industry, academia, and our five closest international partners. This broad-based community increasingly uses AFSIM to assess and compare emerging weapon system concepts, refine operational employment tactics, and ultimately inform research investment and acquisition decisions.
As a M&S product development manager focused on AFSIM R&D, you will be a part of a high-performing product management team to advance AFSIM R&D for the continued benefit of AFRL and the broader DoD. This position requires a versatile candidate with strong leadership, business, communication, and technical skills. The ideal candidate is also an experienced MS&A practitioner with an understanding of the very tools they lead into production.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
Coordinates with the AFSIM Enterprise Model Management Office (MMO), and other members of the AFSIM R&D Product Management Team (PMT) to establish requirements and execute annual (FY) technical development roadmaps.
Engages with stakeholders – namely, the AFSIM Enterprise MMO and Directorate leadership – to regularly communicate status, progress, and issues.
Manages the allocation of resources including funding, tools, and/or infrastructure to promote success across a portfolio of projects and products.
Collaborates with domain experts and end-users in an experienced, agile development team.
Advances the state-of-the-art in digital engineering (DE) and MS&A as a principal steward of AFSIM’s R&D product vision and technical roadmap.
Conducts research on new M&S methods and techniques to advance the state-of-the-art.

Ability to obtain a Top-Secret U.S. Security Clearance with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI).
A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical/computer engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited academic institution. Experience with or exposure to engineering, engagement, mission, and/or campaign level analysis tools such as AFSIM, Suppressor, Brawler, Thunder, or STORM
Experience conducting, supporting, and/or overseeing constructive, virtual, and/or live military simulations.
Knowledge of analytical methods & techniques such as Design of Experiments (DoE)
Knowledge of model-based/model-driven engineering methods, tools, and techniques
Experience using effects-based, statistically derived or physics-based models and simulations.
This is an APDP position requiring Tier/Level II Practitioner Non-Critical certification in Engineering & Technical Management. The selectee will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained. Applicants for this position must list any acquisition certifications and status as an acquisition corps member in their resume. Employees must obtain/maintain current certifications.
Applicant must have at least one (1) year of experience at the next lower grade (DR-02/GS-13 to qualify as a DR-03 applicant), or equivalent in other pay systems.
Desired Qualifications
Ideally, applicants should meet some of the following additional qualifications:
An advanced academic degree in engineering or relevant math or science filed from an accredited college/university.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience presenting complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
Experience working as an integral member of or with agile software development teams.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and planning skills with practical experience on projects using model-based methods and tools to evaluate subsystem technologies or capability concepts.
Proven project management and/or group leadership experience.
Operational background or insight into how current Air Force and allied systems conduct joint warfighting missions.
Experience working with Intel organizations, and military services.
Broad technical background in military communications, sensing, air operations, space operations, and electronic warfare sufficient to understand and model first-order effects.
Desired have 5+ years of professional/specialized experience using scientific/engineering M&S applications. Examples of specialized experience include experience in one or more technical areas: development engineering and program management experience in mechanical, aerospace, and/or electronics disciplines within product, test, and research center environments.
