The United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medical Department of Radiological Laboratory (USAFSAM/OEAR) seeks to fill a Physical Science Technician position at the DX-04 level. This position is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

OPEN TO CURRENT AFRL CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES ONLY.  

  • Position duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Familiarity with radiation dosimeter processing and analysis for devices employed within the Radiation Dosimetry Laboratory, including Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and/or Electronic Personnel Dosimeters (EPDs), or similar equipment. 
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance/Quality Control principles and demonstrates an understanding of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures. Capable of adhering to Standard Operating Procedures and willing to report deviations or issues promptly. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, including USAF installations, Major Commands (MAJCOMs), Headquarters, and Defense Health Agency (DHA) Medical Treatment Facilities. 
  • Experience with documenting actions or consultations in official systems or databases is beneficial. Ability to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) based on interpretation of policies, standards, and regulations applicable to Ionizing Radiation Dosimetry and Quality Assurance/Quality Control requirements. 
  • Experience in formally coordinating updates to laboratory procedures and communicating changes effectively to laboratory personnel. 
  • Promotes a culture where intellectual Property (IP) is developed, documented, protected and encouraged. 
  • Inherent in the technical publication review process is a thorough screening for potential IP. Scientific/engineering knowledge will be utilized to effectively assist in IP transfer, transition or commercialization.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to develop or modify standard methods in a DoD-wide consultative service for the qualitative or quantitative risk to industrial workers and general population from Air Force operations.
  • Specialized experience to provide consultation related to selecting methods of controlling exposure and selection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 
  • Skill in a broad range of reading equipment and sampling techniques required in performing a comprehensive field survey in support of an occupational risk assessment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience supporting or managing components of a military or civilian radiation protection or dosimetry program. 
  • Familiarity with Air Force and DoD guidance such as AFMAN 48-125 (Radiation Protection Program) and DoDI 6055.08 (Occupational Ionizing Radiation Protection). 
  • Experience drafting, reviewing, or revising SOPs, work instructions, or similar documentation in accordance with accreditation or regulatory standards. 
  • Experience responding to inquiries and providing programmatic support to base-level units, MAJCOMs, or DHA facilities. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team in a military, government, or high-reliability organization, contributing to shared goals under mission-driven timelines.
