Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing subject matter expertise and thought leadership in Department of the Air Force (DAF) and Department of Defense (DoD) energy and power science and technology spanning operational energy, installation energy resilience, and advanced agile combat equipment
  • Leading AFRL's Energy Science and Technology Cross-Directorate Coordination, Annual Reporting, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) metrics, Wargames and Exercises; Interfaces with AFRL, Integrated Development Office, AFMC, Integrated Capabilities Command, etc.
  • Developing, writing, and maintaining AFRL's Energy Science and Technology (S&T) Road-mapping, and ensuing alignment to DAF priorities with a focus on transition and technology adoption
  • Providing S&T recommendations to the AFRL Energy Office for incorporation into the Technical Executive Officer S&T portfolio
  • Analyzing current and new higher headquarters strategic documents and guidance to ensure that the AFRL Energy Office’s strategic direction is appropriately aligned. Advises AFRL decision authorities on strategic alignment and applies expertise to provide advice and insight on improvements
  • Identifying and implementing appropriate metrics to track strategic plan execution and health of AFRL energy S&T. Tracks those metrics and reports them to AFRL senior leaders as appropriate.  Updates metrics to ensure most relevant knowledge is available to AFRL decision authorities
  • Overseeing and providing subject matter expertise on the implementation of model-based systems engineering, digital materiel management, and agile program management to accelerate science & technology (S&T) evaluation and the adoption and transition of technologies
  • Facilitating interactions with industrial, international, and academic communities as well as other US Government agencies on matters pertaining to new technologies and their applications

The selected incumbent will serve as Principal General Scientist or Engineer in the AFRL Energy Office within the AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. This position will be filled at the DR-4 (GS-15 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson AFB OH in Dayton OH. This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Renewable Technical Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance 

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (science or engineering) from an accredited academic university
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in energy and power science and technology and Digital Materiel Management
  •  Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate workshops with multiple stakeholders to align incentives and build consensus
  • Ability to perform regular TDY trave
  • Excellent verbal, oral, and written communication skills for technical and senior leader audience
  • Excellent understanding of DAF Corporate structure
