The AFRL Munitions Directorate seeks to hire a Mid-Level DR-02, multidisciplinary position with series 0801 General Eng, 0830 Mechanical Eng, 0855 Electronics Eng, 0861 Aerospace Eng, 1550 Computer Eng, 1520 Mathematician - in the Navigation Section (RWTAN) at Eglin AFB in Valparaiso, Florida. 

Position duties include but are not limited to:

  • Experience with research, science, and engineering, and/or technical management of research and development (R&D) efforts related to aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science and engineering or related fields.
  • Technical training and/or prior experience to be an effective team member working multidisciplinary (R&D) efforts focused on GPS-denied or degraded navigation systems, including a mix of university-level theoretical developments, early AFRL-lead proof-of-concept flight demonstrations, and larger demonstration and testing efforts coordinated with a broader DoD and contractor base.  
  • Experience executing science and technology, R&D, and a history of developing and transitioning theoretical or simulated concepts to hardware proof-of-concept demonstrations and/or coordinating in small teams.  
  • Experience leading science and technology, conducting R&D and managing technical programs, able to operate as an individual contributor or as developmental project/program lead.
  • Direct expertise and/or experience leading developments in some combination of the following is highly desired: cooperative nav, celestial aided nav, magnetic anomaly aided nav, synthetic aperture radar / RF aided nav, anti-jam GPS techniques, other navigation aiding relevant to Air Force platforms, and/or transitioning navigation aiding concept to live flight demonstrations.
  • Experience with open architecture filters/estimators, Kalman filtering, other Bayesian and non-linear filters, batch optimization for navigation, software or hardware in the loop developments, system prototyping, GNC requirements generation, general technical program leadership, guidance/path planning, control implementations, general flight testing, “other” signal processing, strong coding practices in C++, Python, Matlab, Ubuntu/Linux, and Robot Operating System are also desired.  
  • Utilizes multidisciplinary professional engineering work involving the application of electronics, mechanical, aerospace, and/or other engineering/science/mathematical disciplines to support the execution of coordinated research projects and/or processes.
  • Applies several diverse engineering/science practices, techniques, and processes to identify and resolve issues, as well as ensure resolutions are consistent with program objectives, existing policies, and procedures.
  • Determines how best to accomplish multi-disciplinary engineering/science, mathematics objectives, develops and evaluates alternatives, designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interpret results, publishes papers and technical reports, delivers presentations of results.
  • Designs, develops, evaluates, and analyses design constraints and trade-offs for navigation systems.
  • Conducts novel navigation research and transforms concepts into functioning prototypes to demonstrate feasibility and effectiveness of new and emerging navigation solutions.
  • Collaborates with researchers and engineers inside and outside of AFRL to create and develop algorithms, methods, and solutions for improving navigation capabilities.
  • Communicates ideas, concepts, and prototypes effectively through written and oral mediums.
  • Supports or manages R&D programs with internal and external contractors and academia.
  • Identifies S&T test requirements, develops test plans, coordinates test organizations/resources/ranges, facilitates approval processes, and oversees data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Performs duties in a responsive, professional manner consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares contractual documents, technical reports, and/or evaluate technical proposals if needed.
  • Maintains a technical and programmatic cognizance of outside technological and research projects and programs; reports status to peers and senior technical leaders as required.
  • Organizes, manages, and participates in workshops and technical exchange meetings as required.

EXPERIENCE 

  • Individuals must have one year of specialized experience which includes mastery of advanced electronics engineering concepts, principles, practices, standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment sufficient to apply experimental theories, principles, and concepts to project execution and advisory services. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.   • Must have at least one year of specialized related experience at the DR/DO-01/GS-11 or equivalent grade level. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance and or higher as mission dictates additional requirements. 
  • This position is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level/Tier 1 (Foundational) Non-Critical certification in Engineering & Technical Management (N).

Desired Qualifications

Experience with the technical areas below:

  • Proficiency in C/C++, Python, MATLAB
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense or similar research community.
  • Understanding of GPS, GPS jammers, Celestial Navigation, Magnetic Navigation, Extended Kalman Filter design, “Other” Navigation, and related or supporting disciplines.
  • Master’s Degree/PhD from an ABET accredited school.
  • Demonstrated ability leading or guiding small cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams to resolve technical challenges related to navigation (or guidance/control).
  • Experience with facilitating and enabling internal/external collaboration and partnerships for technology development.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within or lead a team to build consensus, seek alternative viewpoints from others, and identify and resolve conflicts/problems with the workforce.
  • Cultivates and sustains a professional environment of cooperation, cohesion, and teamwork.
  • Ability to work and lead others in complex, non-standard, and fast-paced environments.
