The Aerospace Components and Subsystems Technology Division, Sensors Directorate (AFRL/RYD) seeks to hire a senior-level, DR-III Senior General Engineer in Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. The incumbent will serve as the Division Lab Manager and will advise the Chief, Aerospace Components and Subsystems Technology Division, on planning and management of 35+ laboratory facilities.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead Division POC for facilities interactions with Directorate Operations Division, other AFRL TDs, other DoD, other government, industry, and academia
  • Applies considerable engineering judgment and expertise to analyze R&D plans and requirements to develop and maintain Division's laboratory strategy
  • Uses multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to formulate, document, communicate short-term and long-term plans for efficiency and greater capability and use of the Division's multiple laboratories which are used to conduct multi-million dollar state-of-the-art R&D including but not limited to the following: electronics, optoelectronics, lasers, photonics, highly integrated microsystems, and sensor subsystems
  • Assesses complex problems and recommends courses of action to leadership
  • Division lead to implement the most advanced digital engineering principles to modernize and increase efficiency of the Division's laboratories
  • Responsible for developing and managing strategies, programs, and business models necessary for the safe and effective operation of modern research laboratories, including industrial hazardous materials and processes mitigation and control; bio-environmental and occupational safety; equipment maintenance, repair, and calibration; interfacing with logistics personnel, and leading in-house laboratory contractor support
  • Promotes a culture where Intellectual Property (IP) is developed, documented, protected and transitioned
  • Maintains awareness of the technical field and uses scientific/engineering knowledge to advise staff on IP, its transfer and transition to commercial partners and/or weapon systems to include CRADAs, licensing, and, other formal means of transfer
  • Develops and maintains Division's Facilities information and marketing documentation to include the end-to-end value chain analysis to develop make, buy, or rely decisions

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance
  • Level III STM certification
  • A bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first‐year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress‐strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, DR‐02/GS‐13, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience in microelectronics laboratory use, laboratory management, and laboratory support.
  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience as a research or development team lead
  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience in R&D work unit management
  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience with on-site contractor support staff

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a team lead or supervisor role
  • Experience working with other AFRL Directorates
  • Experience in Digital Engineering or Model-Based System Engineering
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense research community specifically the other services and DARPA
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain a professional environment of cooperation, cohesion, and teamwork
  • Experience with developing and maintaining working relationships with academia, industry, and other Government agencies for research
  • Experience in laboratory management software
  • Experience in logistics and PMEL
  • Experience in Lab Safety policies and implementation
