The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced Supervisory Scientist or Engineer to serve as a Structural Materials Evaluation Section Chief in the Accelerated Materials and Processing Solutions Branch of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic &, Materials Performance Division.  This position will be filled at the DR-2 (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.  This position may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Directs, coordinates and oversees training, development and wingman connect events for subordinate employees.
  • Mentors employees, provides employee performance/contribution assessments, and appropriately recognizes employee achievements through formal and informal means
  • Advises and provides counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of senior management.
  • Serves as an authoritative reviewer of laboratory processes, pay, leave, travel, government credit card, and other administrative processes in coordination with the Branch Chief.
  • Provides technology program leadership support to the Branch Chief and ensures manpower, contractual, and laboratory support to the Branch Technical Leads in the execution of the Rapid Response/Failure Analysis Internal Development Capability (IDC) to provide responsive research laboratory support to customers for time-urgent material and process needs.
  • Collaborates with the Branch Chief and Branch Technical Leads in the strategic planning, resourcing, and customer engagement for the Rapid Response/Failure Analysis IDC laboratory capability.
  • Leads R&D, engineering, program management, and/or other professional and technical efforts relevant to the IDC mission
  • Collaborates, interacts, coordinates, and/or directly consults with Department of the Air Force, other services, DoD agencies, other governments agencies, academic, industry, and international partners.
  • Applies expert knowledge and advanced scientific and/or engineering theories, principles, concepts, standards, and methods to ensure assigned projects/processes remain consistent with IDC objectives, costs, schedules, performance criteria, and existing policies
  • Cultivates and sustains a professional atmosphere of cooperation, cohesion, and teamwork

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution
  • Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance
This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level 2 – Practitioner certification in the Engineering & Technical Management stall.  Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on resume.  Selectee will have 5 years to meet the APDP certification requirements of the position

Desired Qualifications

MS in Science or Engineering preferred

  • Leadership experience with multidisciplinary technologies
  • Cross-organizational experience within AFRL, AFMC and/or DAF
  • Experience supervising or mentoring researchers and program managers
  • Minimum 3-year experience in managing research and development laboratory projects, contracts and budget to deliver customer capability
  • Collaboration and conflict management skillsets
  • Excellent presentation and report writing skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative team environment
