Job Overview

Come perform expert level multidisciplinary work in the application of Advanced AI, Machine learning, Data science!  We are looking for an expert level professional to perform engineering work involving the application of electronics, mechanical, systems, aerospace, and/or other engineering disciplines to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate significant and complex research projects and/or processes.  The AFRL Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RW), seeks to hire a Senior-level Principal General Engineer DR-0801-04 (GS-15 equivalent) to serve as the RWTCC Assured AI SME at Eglin AFB FL. in Valparaiso, Florida.   We will be accepting candidate submissions until 22 July 24. This announcement may be used to fill like-vacancies for 120 days after the closing date.  Applicants may be referred for consideration as vacancies occur. Include transcripts with submission. Specialized Experience for this vacancy: Expertise in developing secure software and analyzing vulnerabilities in weapon systems. Proficiency in data analysis, reverse engineering techniques, and working with embedded systems. Strong coding skills in relevant languages for AI/ML and cybersecurity applications. Understanding of Department of Defense testing methods and software development lifecycle. Knowledge of assured AI principles and model-based systems engineering. Experience with development, security, and operations practices to ensure secure and efficient development processes. Deep understanding of AI/ML advancements and their application to defense. Proven leadership and team management skills. The ability to communicate complex technical strategies effectively. Strong background in cybersecurity and AI/ML within the context of weapons systems. Commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and manage multidisciplinary teams in weapon cybersecurity, AI/ML, and data science. Apply cutting-edge AI/MLtechniques (e.g., deep learning, reinforcement learning, unsupervised learning) to solve complex problems in weapons R&D. 
  • Ensure mission assurance and fault tolerance in weapon systems through innovative cyber and AI/ML applications.
  • Define and achieve research objectives, conduct thorough analysis, and document findings. Provide technical vision and strategy aligned with DoD priorities, communicating effectively with senior leaders. 
  • Train and mentor team members to build a highly skilled AI/ML and cybersecurity workforce.
  •  Plan, direct, and coordinate complex weapon R&D projects.
  • Apply advanced AI/ML and cyber knowledge to develop innovative solutions. 
  • Inspire, manage, and mentor a team of engineers and data scientists. 
  • Independently define objectives, evaluate alternatives, and document research outcomes.
  • Work with DoD labs, academic institutions, international and industry partners. 
  • Present detailed technical reports on new concepts and future technology requirements.

    General Engineer

    EXPERIENCE: 

  • Individuals must have one year of specialized experience, which includes mastery of advanced electronics engineering concepts, principles, practices, standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment sufficient to apply experimental theories, principles, and concepts to project execution and advisory services. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service. Experience with the technical areas below:

  • Leading physics-based simulation and analysis, and target and sensor modeling.
  • Computer processing systems and/or modifying existing computer architectures to aid C++ application development.
  • Leading or developing munitions-focused scene phenomenology software used in hardware-in-the-loop weapons testing. The most relevant software for this position is Fast Line-of-Sight Imagery for Exhaust Signatures (FLITES).
  • Software-in-the-loop (scene injection) and/or hardware-in-the-loop testing (scene generation and projection) for munition sensors.
  • C or C++ programming languages, and graphics programming architectures including OpenGL and VULKAN is desired.
  • A Master's or Doctoral Degree is highly desired in an aerospace-related, mechanical, electrical engineering or computer science degree. The ideal candidate would have their thesis or dissertation research pertaining to physics-based simulation and analysis, target and sensor modeling, aerospace engineering phenomena or related science and technology areas.
  • Demonstrated the ability to lead or guide cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams to resolve technical challenges related to modeling aerospace phenomenon.
  • Experience with facilitating and enabling internal/external collaboration and partnerships for technology development.
  • Experience critically thinking about strategic and/or leadership guidance to plan technology development to remain relevant with current technology.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated the ability to lead people, build consensus, seek alternative viewpoints from others, and identify and resolve conflicts/problems with the workforce.
