The Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Access Branch Systems Analysis Group (AFRL/RQRE, SAG) seeks a highly motivated and experienced early to mid-career professional to lead efforts to develop the DOD’s implementation of Digital Engineering within the rocket propulsion area. Primary focus will be identifying the tools required and working with researchers, project managers, and analysts on integrating the DE environment to the benefit of technology transition. The focus will be to establish and implement the Digital System Engineering/analysis processes needed across a range of rocket R&D efforts with tangible impact and effect.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Required to regularly interact with customers/programs on a daily basis. Specifically, working toward tangible products that impact overall efforts, contracts, test campaigns, etc. Principal engineer within the group leading model-based definition. Direct transcribing of information through and with Program Managers, system analysis, and finance.
- In those frequent interactions with AFRL scientists, engineers, and program managers, seeks to understand and develop architecture relevant and provides a tangible benefit to rocket propulsion research thrusts. These may include Ballistic Missile, Tactical missile, In space propulsion and maneuvering or Responsive Space Access or Global Rocket point to point mission areas.
- Engaging with external agencies, encompassing both industry and Government to further Digital Engineering Implementation in acquisition, R&D and T&E efforts within the USAF and USSF rocket propulsion areas
- Work toward developing, influencing and executing the DE component within the direction DoD assigns, rather than function as a services-provider
- Identifies, Integrates, and utilizes model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools that are in alignment with customer use with the intent of laying a guiding template for industry or government groups to implement (transition)
- Identifies targets of opportunity to leverage existing infrastructure, tools, resources existing in the DoD for AFRL use to bring better products to customers.
- Investigates industry, DoD, Academia, best practices for MBSE and Digital Engineering and infuses at the Branch level.
- Conducts extensive literature reviews and evaluates current technology, processes, and opportunities. Reviews results of current research and exploratory development projects to ensure satisfactory progress towards defined goal, to help enable the transition of technology of the USAF, USSF, and DoD.
- Assist others to conceive and implement agreements with other government agencies, universities and industry. Special priority will be placed on customer agencies to facilitate transition of technology to the warfighter.
- Prepares and aids others with technical reports, briefings, proposals, journal articles, conference sessions and symposia presentations. A priority is placed on the effort to socialize the Digital Systems Engineering investigations to the community. With applicant likely to lead committees, create point papers, and hold special sessions to advocate, educate and transition the technical efforts within the AFRL.
- Effectively expands activities beyond a traditional system engineering role, rather toward researching HOW to do digital systems engineering.

Required Qualifications
- United States Citizenship
- Ability to obtain and maintain secret security clearance
- Must have at least two years of specialized experience at the DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) grade level or a master’s degree, with exposure to the following aspects: IPT Lead, Program/Project Management, Program/Project Planning, System Design or System Architecting or Model Based Systems Engineering Experience, Experience in working in cross-functional teams, working with and influencing key stakeholders
- This position is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level II non-critical certification in STM (I). The selectee will have 24-months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained.
