The Highly Integrated Microsystems Branch (AFRL/RYDI), Sensors Directorate seeks to hire a Mid-level Research Electronics Engineer, DR-0855-02, in Dayton, OH.  This position is open to candidates currently at the DR-01 (or equivalent grade) level eligible for promotion and/or current DR-02 (or equivalent grade) level candidates for reassignment.

AFRL Sensor Directorate’s Highly Integrated Microsystems Branch (AFRL/RYDI) is looking for a RF/Microwave/mm-wave Design Engineer ready to take on the challenges of RF front-end module component design and (3D)-integration.  A candidate for this role should have experience with mmic design, including PA, LNA, switches, duplexers, couplers etc., as well as module integration utilizing high-frequency PCB materials and laminates.  The candidate should be able to make decisions on component placement, matching, and routing using advanced circuit, EM, and thermal simulation tools to ensure good isolation, optimum matching, minimal loss, and reliability of integrated modules.  The candidate will be working with a team composed of design engineers, advanced packaging engineers, and technicians to develop novel 3D heterogeneously integrated (3DHI) modules for defense applications.

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • RF/Microwave/mm-wave integrated circuit design primarily utilizing III-V material groups;
  • Integration of components developed in diverse material systems (GaN, GaAs, InP, silicon etc.), utilizing high-frequency PCB material, interposers, and laminates;
  • Utilize various CAD programs (Cadence AWR, Keysight ADS, HFSS, COMSOL, and Altium) for circuit, board, and package design;
  • Familiarity with RF test procedures and equipment including Network Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer, RF/DC signal generators, etc. to assist performance characterization;
  • Prepare documents for communications with peers, management, and customers; and,
  • Interact with different disciplines and peers to deliver high-performance and quality products.

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship is required.
  • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, DR-1, or equivalent in other pay systems.  This includes experience developing and/or analyzing integrated circuit components having relevance to Department of Air Force priorities including Radio Frequency (RF) sensors and spectrum warfare technologies. 
  • Applicants must be able to meet the OPM Qualification Standards of the position being filled.

  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Top Secret with access to SCI and SAP security clearance, as condition of employment.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent will be subject to random testing.
  • Excellent verbal, oral, and written communication skills for technical and senior leader audiences.
  • The ability to perform TDY travel approximately 10% of the time. 
  • This is an APDP position requiring Level /Tier 2 (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification in Engineering and Technical Management (N). This position has been designated as an acquisition position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). The employee must meet, or be capable of meeting Defense Acquisition Work Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements applicable to the duties of the position.  *Applicants must list all completed APDP certification and status of acquisition corps membership on their resume.  
  • The position is eligible for situational telework and will require routine mission travel, regular classified engagements, and in-person meetings that cannot always be scheduled around a regular/recurring telework schedule. Employee must live within the commuting area of Wright-Patterson AFB.
     

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's of Science in Electrical/Electronics Engineering preferred.
  • 3+ years experience in RF industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and integrating RF components (PA, LNA, switches, filters, beamformers, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience mitigating parasitic effects from laminate/PCB/package relying on EM. simulation including proficient use of HFSS, ADS FEM, AWR Analyst or similar.
  • Hands-on RF measurement-related lab skills. 
  • Experience in data analysis/mining/extraction methods for modeling and performance analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a sense of responsibility.
  • Bonus: Understanding of thermal effects for design, including CAD experience. COMSOL, Cadence/AWR Celsius, Keysight ADS Electro-thermal or similar.
