The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level General Engineer (0801), Materials Engineer (0806) or related job series to serve as Polymer Matrix Composites Branch Deputy Chief (RXNP) in the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic, and Materials Performance Division. This position will be filled at the DR-03 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The ideal candidated will have experience leading and managing diverse, multi-functional teams in the operations of a DoD research and development (R&D) environment, spanning knowledge of in-house research, contracting and management of external R&D programs, and transition of technology.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
• Supports the Branch Chief in all aspects of Branch Chief duties leading a team of approximately 20 government and military researchers and program managers in addition to approximately 30 contractors, exercising full authority in their absence.
• Assists the Branch Chief in providing efficient management of the branch to include planning, organizing, financial execution, and evaluation of all research and development activities conducted by branch personnel.
• Applies expert knowledge to in-house and extramural research, development, and demonstration of polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials and processes and performance technologies as applied to complex composite structures and joints, enabling technology for autonomous collaborative platforms, agile and affordable composite manufacturing, materials qualification, or electro-magnetic resilient structures, among others.
• Oversees in-house and contractual programs ranging from basic research and exploratory development to advanced component demonstration efforts.
• Focuses on the development and application of integrated modeling and simulation tools with advanced experimentation to accelerate the development of PMC materials and processes.
• Actively engages organizational planning activities within the Branch, Directorate, Air Force, DoD, and other governmental agencies and provides input into future requirements and roadmaps.
• Helps lead professional engineering and scientific work to transition developed technologies to Air Force and Space Force systems to increase system performance and efficiency, reduce cost, and accelerate manufacture.
• Helps shape the branch culture and crafts effective branch business practices.
• Plans, prioritizes, and manages infrastructure, logistics, safety, and security elements within the branch.

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.
- Must have at lesat one year of specialised experience at the DR-02/GS-13 or equivalent level.
- Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Must have Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) Lever/Tier 2 (Practitioner) non-Critical certification in Engineering & Technical Management or obtain within 60 months of assignment
Desired Qualifications
• Possess a PhD in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.
• Demonstrated experience (5-10 years) in the operations of DoD research and development (R&D) environment, spanning knowledge of in-house research, contracting and management of external R&D programs, and transition of technology.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
