The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level Scientist and Engineer to serve as a Research Materials Engineer in the Exploratory Research Section of the Photonic Materials Branch of the Photonic, Electronic, and Soft Materials Division.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- The exploration of emerging material concepts, and processes (synthesis, fabrication, characterization, design, modeling, etc.) to generate and propagate lasers and the incorporation of organic or inorganic materials for use in future devices that sense and limit transmission of electromagnetic radiation with high specificity is at the core of the team.
- Leads efforts including structure-property studies, functionalization of nano particles for EM control, processing of laser source materials, wet chemistry for development of responsive materials, and exploration of applicability.
- Assesses and develops emerging innovations and the convergence of modeling, data, automation, machine learning and associated activities to digitize the Materials and Manufacturing Enterprise.
- Works with the Research Team Lead, line managers, program managers, and the corporate planning process to integrate efforts into the Research Team with the broader RX strategy and technology program.
- Propose against external funding opportunities.
- Maintain's RX's nationally recognized competencies and external results, society participation, and publications.
- Partners with development efforts across RX to transition technology and understand critical path issues.
This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

Required Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship
- Current AFRL Civilian DR-02 employee
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
- Initial and random drug testing is a condition of employment for this position. Applicants must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.
- At a minimum, unofficial transcript of highest relevant degree must be uploaded with application.
- This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level 1 certification (Foundational) in Engineering & Technical Management.
- Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on their resume. Selectee will have 60 months to meet the APDP certification requirements for the position.
