The Air Force Research Laboratory’s Atomic Long-range Systems branch (AFRL/RVBN) seeks a highly motivated and experienced mid-career professional to lead Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) engineering efforts for nuclear technology payload and testbed development and/or integration. Primary focus will be the implementation of systems engineering processes across a range of nuclear R&D efforts, including requirements and system architecture development of experimental nuclear systems and test planning.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assist Program Manager and provide technical leadership in the implementation of systems engineering processes
- Lead system level technical requirements development, management of technology contracts including cost and schedule, and risk control
- Develop and support long-range technology planning, research, development, strategy, and transition efforts
- Continually evaluate in-house R&D efforts for tech transition and testing suitability for development for operational use, and evaluate R&D efforts of industry, universities, and other government agencies for pertinent development
- Serve as primary interface between RVBN, government stakeholders, contractors, end-users, suppliers, and test organizations
- Apply Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and requirements management systems to capture critical program information and inform decisions made during system development
- Support creation and maintenance of analysis methods and digital models for development and integration efforts on current and future programs
- Participate in test planning for qualification and future system studies
- Foster collaboration with DOD partners and stakeholders as well as DOE/NNSA National laboratories

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university
- Demonstrated experience leading systems engineering efforts of large, complex assembly, research, and/or development programs
- Significant knowledge of systems engineering practices including requirement development/management, design, failure and risk assessment, and verification/validation.
- Knowledge of systems engineering tools and techniques, project work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, budget management, and project control
- Familiarity with relevant classification guidance and demonstrated commitment to USAF goals in upholding safeguards for classified information
- Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain, a DOD TS/SCI clearance
- Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (or equivalent) level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Desired Qualifications
- 3-5 years leadership or personnel management in relevant high-consequence operational environments
- Experience leading GN&C systems engineering efforts associated with nuclear weapon programs
- Experience in strategic level radiation development of GN&C components and systems
- Knowledge of and experience utilizing Earned Value Management (EVM) tools and processes
- Effective communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to present, explain, and advise management and/or external sponsors
- Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities
- Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities
- Familiarity with basic principles associated with the design, development, qualification, certification, assembly, production, surveillance, and/or testing of GN&C nuclear components or systems
- Experience in development testing of GN&C technologies to support Nuclear mission environments and objectives
- Experience with Nuclear Surety Requirements and application
- Experience as a DOD Derivative Classifier
