The Air Force Research Laboratory, Information Directorate Fabrication Branch (AFRL/RIOLF), is seeking to fill a WG-3414-11, Journeyman Machinist position located in Rome, NY. The primary purpose of this position is to manufacture complex and non-routine parts and items from raw stock of different metals and alloys through the use of conventional and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining centers using common trade practices.

 

Roles and responsibilities of this position include:

  • The incumbent will work closely with the Directorate’s scientists and engineers to design, fabricate, modify and/or repair the highest quality manufactured products for Research and Development Projects throughout Rome Research Site.

  • Utilize a variety of precision measuring instruments and equipment, to include: vernier calipers, height gauges, squares, protractors, vee blocks, gauge blocks, parallel bars, dial indicators, optical and mechanical comparators, etc. 

  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment. 

  • Working independently and within a team structure, at times may be required to assist the various craftsmen of the Fabrication Branch with complex manufactured items.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship Required.

  • Males must be registered for Selective Service, see www.sss.gov.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain required background investigation.

  • The work may require an employee to drive a motor vehicle and an appropriate, valid driver's license will be required.

  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds. 

  • Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required initial and annual physical fitness/physical agility tests, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth.

  • The ability to do the work of a Machinist without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common Machinist duties such as manufacturing, repairing, and rebuilding equipment parts and items; set up, operate, program, and maintain Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinery; check requirements for drawings and written instructions; use basic math; and a variety of tools. I work under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and, upon completion, to make sure they are properly performed.   

Desired Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience working in an industrial environment as a Machinist.

  • The ability to plan, program and set up CNC machining centers, lathes, and conventional machine shop equipment.

  • The ability to work independently and within a team structure.
