The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level scientist/engineer to serve as a member of a dynamic and interdisciplinary researcher in the Polymer Matrix Composites Branch (RXNP) of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic, and Materials Performance Division (RXN).  

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Leads development and evaluates performance of novel multi-functional materials and composite variants for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications
  • Develops and maintains a strong understanding of Department of Defense (DoD) operational needs related to counter directed energy weapon (DEW)/nuclear weapon systems technologies
  • Identifies technical gaps in critical materials performance and develops research and development plans for addressing the gaps
  • Serves as strong liaison between CDEW advanced capabilities team (6.3) and fundamental research teams (6.1/6.2) focused on materials and processes (M&P) and performance, informing and executing research and development to accelerate Department of Air Force (DAF) capabilities.
  • Communicates findings to the technical community, DoD programs, and senior leadership to enable transition of technology to industry and DoD users.
  • Develops a portfolio strategy, identifies cross-team and interdisciplinary intramural partnering opportunities
  • Manages extramural programs to advance multi-functional and composite materials technologies
  • Develops understanding of the response of composite materials in application-relevant environments 
  • Interacts and develops partnerships with government, industrial and academic partners, as well as exploring and establishing international partnerships

This position will be filled at the DR-2 (GS-12-13 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio.  

This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Term appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution;
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) and Special Access Program (SAP) eligibility. 
  • This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level II certification in the Science and Technology Manager (STM) functional stall.  
  • Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on resume.  
  • Selectee will have 24 months to meet the APDP certification requirements for the position.
     

Desired Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant technical field (materials science engineering, chemistry or chemical engineering, polymer science/engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or related fields), from an ABET accredited academic institution
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Team-oriented approach and skills at building networks
  • Strong background in materials research and experimental characterization 
  • Background in program management, to include setting project requirements and executing technical, cost, and schedule objectives
  • Awareness or experience with materials, process, and testing specifications and standards
  • Understanding of electromagnetics and/or nuclear interactions with materials
