The Optical Radiation Bioeffects Branch of the 711th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711HPW/RHDO) seeks to hire a DR-1306/0858-02 Research Physicist/Biomedical Engineer in San Antonio, TX.
Position duties include, but not limited to:
- Plans, designs, and conducts research to characterize the interactions of the electromagnetic spectrum with biological systems.
- Develops test plans, procedures, data collection techniques and optical systems design techniques for conducting bioeffects research, including the investigation of laser bioeffects in ultrashort and other advanced laser-tissue interaction regimes.
- Develops and utilizes physics-based computer models and software addressing laboratory methods and predicting biological effects due to directed energy exposures.
- Expands the technical database and analytical technologies for assessing the operational and occupational risks from a wide range of laser systems, including ultrashort pulse systems and megawatt-class high energy lasers, and their countermeasures.
- Reviews, evaluates, and recommends optical engineering resources to meet current and future needs of AFRL.
- Leads and collaborates on interdisciplinary teams that interact, coordinate, consult and collaborate directly with military and civilian scientists within AFRL, as well as representatives from national and international organizations.
- Prepares research results for presentation either in written form in scientific periodicals or technical reports or as oral presentations at national and international conferences and meetings. Participates in the preparation and defense of animal and/or human research protocols.
- Promotes a culture where intellectual Property (IP) is developed, documented, protected and encouraged. Inherent in the technical publication review process is a thorough screening for potential IP. Scientific/engineering knowledge will be utilized to effectively assist in IP transfer, transition or commercialization.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions, and require a Level 1 certification (Foundational). The selectee will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or waiver must be obtained.

- Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointments. This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.

- 4th generation computer coding/laboratory systems design experience: MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, COMSOL, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator.
- Experimental design & protocol development experience.

- Laser systems/optical design/operation experience, including ultrashort pulsed systems and megawatt-class high energy lasers.
