The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (RX) seeks to hire a motivated, skilled, and experienced mid-level Scientist or Engineer to serve as a Biomaterials Scientist or Biomaterials Engineer in the Biomaterials Branch of the Photonic, Electronic and Soft Materials Division.  This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Renewable Technical Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs research or other professional and scientific work involving the application of multi-disciplinary (such as: microbiology, physiology, genetics, botany, animal science, entomology, toxicology, etc.) or unique biological science theories and techniques related to the study of living organisms and/or objects and how they relate to their environment.
  • Performs analysis and uses systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to manage projects related to materials and manufacturing.
  • Manages projects including development, oversight, financial, and reporting.
  • Determines how to best accomplish biological science objectives, develops, and evaluates alternatives, designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interprets results, publishes papers and technical reports, delivers presentations of results, and monitors in-house activities.
  • Prepares contractual documents, technical reports, and/or evaluates technical proposals if needed.
  • Develops and maintains collaborations within and outside of AFRL.
  • Maintains a technical and programmatic cognizance of outside technological and research projects and programs; reports status to peers and senior technical leaders as required.
  • Organizes, manages and participates in workshops and technical exchange meetings as required.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.
  • Biomaterials Scientist or Biomaterials Engineer Position designation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) Level II (Practitioner) certification in Engineering & Technical Management within 5 years of appointment.
  • Self-motivation, a creative attitude, and a passion for biotechnology.

Desired Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D., in biotechnology, bioengineering, biomolecular sciences, chemical engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, process engineering, chemistry, material sciences, or related fields.
  • Three or more years of professional research experience in biotechnology, bioengineering, molecular biology, biomaterials, or related fields is highly desired.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication including technical reports and briefings.
  • Experience with BSL-2 (or higher) techniques and operations in R&D settings.
  • Experience with scaled up biofermentation in bioreactors and DSP processes for proteins and small molecules.
  • Expertise in recombinant DNA techniques, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, microbial systems including model and non-model microorganisms, bioinformatics, multi-omics, microscopy, and cell culturing.
  • Hands-on experience with molecular, biochemical and materials characterization.
  • Experience in project management including development, oversight, and reporting.
  • Demonstrate strong team player characteristics and leadership including supporting successful professional development of others through mentorships.
  • Recognized technical expert as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, patents, keynote speaking, and others.
