The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced engineer or scientist to conduct synthetic polymer chemistry and 2D materials research in the Materials Development Section of the Polymers & Specialty Materials Branch in the Photonic, Electronic and Soft Materials Division. This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, OH. This position may be filled as a Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
Conducts synthetic chemistry and processing in the fields of covalent organic frameworks, small molecules, and flow chemistry for thin films, hybrid materials, nano and/or colloidal materials supporting research and development in materials for high-temp electronics, sensing, and additive manufacturing.
Conducts purification and characterization of synthesized materials through common methods such as crystallization, chromatography, Raman, FT-IR, UV-Vis, NMR, AFM, XRD, TEM/SEM, etc.
Collaborates with computational and experimental scientists and engineers inside and outside AFRL in the performance of basic and applied research.
Assesses and identifies opportunities for polymeric, hybrid, & specialty materials and processes to deliver aerospace & defense capabilities, including writing proposals and developing technology roadmaps.

Required Qualifications
US Citizenship
Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.

Ability to obtain and/or maintain a Secret Clearance
Desired Qualifications
Graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Polymer Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Materials Science
Hands-on experience with synthetic techniques in COFs, polymers, hybrid, nano and/or colloidal materials chemistry, processing, and related analytical/characterization techniques
Broad expertise in materials science
Proven track record writing proposals for both basic and applied research as well as writing publications and giving presentations
Experience leading polymeric, 2D materials, and/or COF synthesis/processing research projects
Experience leading collaborations with other institutions
Experience interfacing with external customers
Mentoring experience
