The Air Force Research Laboratory’s Nuclear Mission Branch (AFRL/RVBN) seeks a highly motivated early career professional to conduct scientific research and technology development activities in support of nuclear deterrence objectives. This position is located at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), Albuquerque, New Mexico.  These are term positions of up to six years with the opportunity to extend or convert to permanent positions.

Potential research areas include:

  • Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) system development and qualification
  • Computational modeling of plasmas in dynamic environments
  • Novel re-entry vehicle development and flight testing
  • Engineering and assembly of nuclear technology payloads and testbed flight bodies
  • Software development for re-entry testbed efforts

Position duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide entry level engineering support to RVBN programs and research areas
  • Assist in technical design and data analysis for various RVBN projects
  • Execute a variety of developmental duties designed to develop knowledge and skill in applying general engineering principles, methods and techniques.
  • Performing general engineering tasks of limited scope and difficulty
  • Foster collaboration with industry and government partners
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies and professional developments to maintain current in the field
  • Use computers/computer software such as analysis tools and project tracking programs to solve engineering problems and facilitate work.

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship
  • A bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited academic university and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD TS/SCI clearance
  • Knowledge of computer operations and standard office software applications.

  • Relevant internship or work experience
  • Professional knowledge of general engineering policies, theories, principles and concepts, and familiarity with other engineering disciplines to carry out diverse engineering assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both as part of a team and independently in a dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to accurately document, report, assess situations, and make informed judgments.
  • The ability to analyze, interpret and apply general engineering rules and procedures in a variety of situations and recommend effective solutions.
