The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced Ceramic Materials Scientist or Engineer to serve as an Engineer or Scientist in the Ceramics Branch of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic and Materials Performance Division. This position will be filled at the DR-2 (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. This position may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

- Conducts research on ceramics and ceramic matrix composites for high temperature and multifunctional high-speed systems applications, with an emphasis on very extreme environment materials
- May perform research on materials discovery, processing science, and/or thermal and mechanical performance of materials through experimentation, characterization and modeling
- Leads research and development programs on ceramic and ceramic matrix composite materials in partnership with industry, academic and other government agency collaborators
- Works both independently and as part of a team of researchers and science and technology program managers to develop materials, processes, and performance understanding of ceramic and ceramic matrix composite materials for Department of the Air Force (air and space platform) applications
- Interacts with and develops research and development activities with other technology directorates in the Air Force Research Laboratory, other organizations within the Department of the Air Force, and with industrial, academic, and other government agency partners
- Disseminates research and program findings through publications and conference presentations

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an (ABET) accredited academic institution; if highest earned S&E degree is lower than a PhD, the applicant must also have one year of experience at the DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) to be hired at the DR-02 level and the applicant must also have one year of experience at the DR-02 (GS-13 equivalent) to be hired at the DR-03 level.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance (Note: this is part of the onboard process after hiring selection).
Desired Qualifications
- Possess an advanced professional science and engineering (S&E) degree at the PhD level, in a relevant technical field (chemistry, chemical engineering, ceramic science and engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, or related fields), from an ABET accredited academic institution
- Interest and/or expertise in ceramic or ceramic matrix composite materials and process development, performance understanding, and/or characterization, with an emphasis on experience or desire to develop ceramics / CMCs for extreme environment and short duration applications
- Demonstrated ability to perform materials science research both independently and in a multidisciplinary team with other researchers, program managers, and leaders
- Experience leading research and development programs, managing technical milestones, cost, schedule, and risk and prior success with transitioning S&T into the next phase of development and/or implementation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
