The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated mid-level Engineer with experience in High Temp Metals and Additive Manufacturing to serve as a Materials Engineer in the Propulsion, Structures and Manufacturing Enterprise Branch of the Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies Division. This position will be filled at the DR-II (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-III (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. This posting closes on 30 July 2021.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain awareness of AF needs for manufacturing technology development in the areas of high temperature metals and additive manufacturing of metals for aircraft and spacecraft
- Invent technical projects that will satisfy these requirements and transition to AF systems, and act as technical lead for the procurement and execution of the projects
- Write proposals and give presentations to obtain funding to procure necessary technical projects
- Manage technical, cost, and schedule aspects of assigned projects
- Coordinate with shareholders, other services, and potential users to determine if externally funded projects will meet AF requirements
- Provide findings and results in written and presentation formats to various stakeholders
- Provide leadership and expertise required to transition developed Manufacturing Technology to Air Force Weapon Systems
Required Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance (for new hires); Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance (for current employees)
- This position has been designated as an acquisition position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). The employee must meet, or be capable of meeting, Defense Acquisition Work Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements applicable to the duties of the position. This position requires Level II (DR-II) or Level III (DR-III) certification in the Science and Technology Manager (STM) functional stall and a may require a 3-year tenure agreement (DR-III). Selectee will have 24-months to meet the APDP certification requirements of the position. Applicant must list all completed acquisition certifications on resume.
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in a related field
- PhD or 2-7 yrs of industry experience
- Proven ability to identify and execute research to solve problems in metal-based additive manufacturing technologies and other high temperature metal manufacturing technologies
- High temperature metals experience, such as nickel-based superalloys
- Laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing experience
- Scramjet propulsion materials and systems experience
- Demonstrated ability to transition technologies to industrial users
- Experience managing technical, schedule and financial aspects of projects
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
