The Cognition and Modeling Branch of the 711th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711 HPW/RHWEM) seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02, Cognitive Neuroscientist at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. 

 

This position will support research aims within the Digital Models of Cognition Core Research Area, which focuses on developing holistic models that support quantitative understanding and prediction of mission effectiveness across domains and at different levels of abstraction.  This includes generating new research ideas and developing study designs and analysis procedures involving, but not limited to, electroencephalogram (EEG) data.  Work also includes:

  • Analyzing and interpreting behavioral, neural, and possibly other physiological datasets. 
  • Writing manuscripts and presenting work at associated conferences and symposia. 
  • Briefing AFRL S&T leadership and the broader scientific community
  • Working with a multidisciplinary team, including cognitive and mathematical modelers, biomedical and research engineers, research physicists, etc., to integrate neural metrics into various modeling formalisms.

We need someone with an interest/experience in leading research initiatives and acting as a conduit for collaborative efforts at the intersection of cognition and physiology.

Required Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship
  • Males must be registered for Selective Service
  • These positions may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.
  • Security Clearance:  This position requires possession of or the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance
  • These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions and require a Level 2 certificate (Practitioner). The selectees will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field, equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Acquisitions (KSAs):

  • PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, Cognitive Psychology, or related field
  • Experience of a diverse set of EEG analysis skills
  • 5+ years of experience (including graduate school) with the use and analysis of behavioral and neural datasets in programming languages and statistical analysis software
  • 1+ years of experience and training in fields associated with human learning and cognition
  • Familiarity with computational and mathematical models of perception and cognition is desirable.
  • Experience with or knowledge of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and/or Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is desirable.
