The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level materials engineer with aerospace polymeric materials experience to serve as a Polymer Materials & Processes Engineer in the Accelerated Materials and Processing Solutions Branch of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic, and Materials Performance Division. The ideal candidate will have experience in aerospace elastomeric materials and processes (M&P), including material evaluation test methods.
This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-03 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. This position may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Independently conceives, plans, and conducts exploratory development efforts and supportability programs for aerospace sealants, molded elastomers, and related M&P.
- Provides expert aerospace elastomeric M&P consultation to system program offices, air logistics centers, operational commands, other government agencies, industry, and academia.
- Participates on technical problem-solving teams, industry specifications/standards committees, and professional societies.
- Maintains expertise in polymer analysis and testing equipment/techniques.
- Monitors development contracts; evaluates technical deliverables, work statements and purchase requests; incorporates detailed technical and user requirements into in-house or contractual efforts; estimates funds, time, personnel, equipment, and facilities required for technical efforts.
- Continues to strengthen technical knowledge in order to solve the Department’s most critical technical challenges and enable advancements in Air Force Systems.
- Regularly interfaces with customers, other researchers, and all levels of management; prepares and delivers expert technical reports and briefings related to the areas described above.
- Promotes a culture where intellectual property is developed, documented, protected, and properly transitioned.

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an ABET accredited academic institution. If highest earned S&E degree is a Bachelor’s the applicant must also have one year of experience at the DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) level.
- Must have Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) Level/Tier 2 (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification in Engineering & Technical Management or obtain within 60 months of assignment
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced Technical Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- At least 10 years working experience covering a broad range of aerospace polymeric materials, especially elastomeric materials and processes as well as adhesive bonding.
- Working knowledge of standard test methods for aerospace sealant, elastomer, and adhesive materials including analyzing and interpreting results, ideally with active participation in related industry committees.
- Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, challenging, and rewarding environment.
- Strong communication skills as demonstrated through the preparation and delivery of written technical reports/oral presentations to technical audiences and organizational leadership.
- Experience with research & development contracts and transition of new technologies.
- Problem solving experience related to aerospace elastomeric polymer materials & processes in manufacturing, depot, and/or operational settings.
