The Bioeffects Division of the 711^th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711 HPW/RHD) seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02, or DR-03, Laser Physicist at San Antonio, TX. 

This position supports research aims within the Directed Energy Bioeffects & Mechanisms Core Research Area, which focuses on building a knowledge base of human biological responses across the electromagnetic spectrum. 

Work includes:

• Performs professional engineering and scientific work involving the integration of engineering and other science disciplines (e.g., biology, physics, physiology, medicine, or chemistry) to enhance bioeffects along the electromagnetic spectrum. 
• Uses advanced electro-optical engineering skills to design, validate, and implement advanced experimental setups around novel laser systems, and uses laboratory techniques and experimental equipment to advance laser bioeffects efforts.
• Independently defines research objectives and determines how they may be best accomplished, develops and evaluates alternatives, defines the approach, conducts the analyses, and documents findings and products related to laser bioeffects. 
• Leads interdisciplinary teams and develops/modifies new methods and approaches to enhance knowledge in physics and electro-optical engineering. 
• Applies innovative electro-optical engineering practices, techniques, and methodology to identify, analyze , document, and resolve complex research problems. Informs and collaborate with subject matter experts across organziations to implement physics based engineering solutions to complex challenges.  

• Demonstrates creativity and foresight by identifying, preparing, and presenting detailed reports, proposals, and briefings on new concepts and future technical direction. Collaborates, interacts, coordinates, and/or directly consults with Air Force, other government, Department of Defense, academic, and industry partners.

Required Qualifications

• United States Citizenship
• Males must be registered for Selective Service
• These positions may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.
• Security Clearance: This position requires possession of or the ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance
• These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions and require a Level 1 certification (Foundational). The selectees will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field, equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.  Applicants must also meet the Basic Qualification requirements for 1310 (Physics), 1306 (Health Physics) or 0858 (Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering) series to qualify. To view the Individual Occupational Requirements for this position, click on the following links:

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Acquisitions (KSAs):

• Master’s, Doctorate, or PhD in Physics, Health Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
• Laser Experience – experience with laser concepts, laser systems, and optical designs, development, and operation
• Leadership Experience – experience leading diverse teams and managing complex projects to meet cost, schedule, and performance expectations
• Computational Experience – Statistical and/or data analysis experience with coding languages such as MATLAB/R, Python, C+/C++.
