Job Overview

AFWERX seeks to hire a senior-level, Deputy Director.  The incumbent will serve as the Deputy Director of AFWERX, forging an innovation ecosystem that delivers disruptive Air and Space capabilities.
 
Position duties include, but not limited to:
  • Advise AFWERX Director on all matters relating to systems engineering, planning, and cost, schedule and performance issues of AFWERX programs/projects; and directing, organizing, and exercising control over non-supervisory employees assigned to AFRL/RG as well as a number of contracted personnel.
  • Build/sustain effective working relationships with Department of Defense, Air Force, and Space Force Leadership as well as industry/academic leaders and local/state/federal elected officials.
  • Research, interpret, analyze and use a high degree of judgment to provide advice to the application of policy and guidance to AFWERX, AFRL, and other organizations activities, ensuring that efforts comply with legal and regulatory requirement; meet customer needs and adhere to advanced multidisciplinary engineering methods, theories, & standards; and align to and meet the intent of the AFWERX mission. 
  • Utilize multidisciplinary professional engineering knowledge to independently plan, project costs, develop schedules, prioritize, organize and carry out activities entailed in fulfilling major duties and responsibilities including initiatives to increase effectiveness of working relationships and efficiencies within AFRL/RG.
  • Track outcomes and develop metrics to track performance of AFWERX initiatives, and utilize metrics and systems engineering fundamentals to continually improve performance objectives and schedule milestones of future efforts.
  • Resolve problems that arise by determining the approaches to be taken and the methodologies to be used making independent judgments that can be defended as necessary.
  • Represent AFWERX with a variety of installation and functional area organizations. 
  • Develop new methods for testing and evaluating the effectiveness of innovation actions and processes in support of Air Force mission needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Applicants must have least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade DR‐03/DO-03, or equivalent in other pay systems. 
  • Must be able to meet Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) requirements.
  • Pay range: DR/DO-04, $123,545 - $152,771
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with access to SCI and SAP as a condition of employment.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent will be subject to random testing.
  • Ability to perform TDY travel approximately 25% time

Desired Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in Engineering, Science, and/or Business
  • Familiarity with the Department of the Air Force, Air Force Materiel Command, and the Air Force Research Laboratory
  • Supervisory leadership experience with Federal Civilians and Military members
  • Experience with the DAF SBIR/STTR program
