AFWERX seeks to hire a senior-level, DR-0801-04, Principal General Engineer. The incumbent serves as the Chief Engineer and Technical Engineering Authority for AFWERX.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Applies expert knowledge and mastery of advanced engineering methods, theories, and standards to provide advice and counsel to the AFWERX Director on engineering matters to include systems engineering and airworthiness.
- Utilizes multidisciplinary professional engineering knowledge to develop, improve, and implement tailored engineering process, policies, practices, tools, and training across the AFWERX portfolio and entire AFWERX workforce to ensure successful program execution.
- Establishes and maintains working partnerships in AFRL, across AFMC, Air Force, DoD, industry, academia, and personnel from the acquisition and sustainment enterprises to ensure technology development efforts are informed by proper requirements and to maximize technology transition success.
- Ensures AFWERX remains compliant with AFRL and higher headquarters engineering policies.
- Mentors AFWERX personnel and provides engineering guidance and coaching to scientists, engineers, analysts, program managers, and functional support personnel during all phases of innovation and technology development within AFWERX.
- AFWERX representative to the AFRL Systems Engineer Council; collaborates with the Director of Engineering and other Directorate Chief Engineers to develop and promote consistent systems engineering policy and training across AFRL and to ensure broadest dissemination of enterprise best practices.
- Measures engineering application and effectiveness within AFWERX.
- Participates in relevant professional societies and establishes a network outside AFWERX and Air Force in order to keep abreast of the latest engineering and technology developments in industry and academia.

Required Qualifications
- This job announcement is open to highly qualified current DR-03s (or equivalent) that are promotion/re-promotion eligible and DR-04s (or equivalent) at current grade that are reassignment eligible.
- Applicants must have least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade DR‐03, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include the ability to interpret, select, and apply a variety of engineering principles and guidelines. Analyze, investigate, and delineate specifics of the problem encountered and devises ways to meeting engineering requirements and develop technical programs to accomplish objectives.
- Pay range: DR-04, $118,678-$146,757 (base salary) - total salary will be determined on employee location.
- Must be a United States Citizen
- Must be qualified for 0801 engineering series. Qualifications standards for the 08XX series can be found at: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/#url=0800-ndx. A professional engineering degree at the bachelor’s level from an ABET accredited institution in General Engineering or a closely related field is required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with access to SCI and SAP as a condition of employment.
- This is a drug testing designated position and incumbent will be subject to random testing.
- Ability to perform TDY travel approximately 25% time
