The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Directed Energy Directorate (RD), Laser Division, located on Kirtland AFB, NM is seeking candidates with an Electrical Engineering, Laser Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Optics background for the position of Optical Scientist/Engineer.  
 
The principal focus for this position includes but is not limited to:
 
  • Conducting basic and applied research concerning the power scaling, packaging, and development of fiber laser and novel laser sources emitting in the near and mid infrared wavelengths.
  • Being an integral part of a team tasked with developing novel pathways to push laser technology in directions consistent with demanding and rapidly evolving Air Force needs. 
  •  Augmenting a research team that is currently engaged in the design, engineering, development, testing, and packaging of fiber laser amplifiers and associated subcomponents as well as researching beam combination and integration of both pulsed and CW laser sources into warfighting systems.
  •  Demonstrating hands-on experience and skill set in any one or a combination of the following areas: mechanical engineering, fiber splicing, diagnostics, and design, and optical alignment.  
  •  Communicating through oral and written skills in anticipation of becoming a thought leader, eventually driving research and external collaborations in this area as well as publishing and presenting research at national and international conferences.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
  • PhD or MS + 3 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Optics. 
  • With relevant experience in R&D with high power lasers or complex optical systems

Desired Qualifications

  •  Experience with controls systems, beam combination,  alignment of complex optical systems, and laser source development 
  •  Understanding of thermal management, system design, and optical component development  including CAD, COMSOL and other software. 
  •  Knowledge of and experience with computer programs for automation, simulation, data analysis and processing such as Python, Matlab w/Simulink, Labview, and other related software.
