The AFRL Munitions Directorate (RW) seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02 (GS-12/-13 equivalent) General Engineer / Operations Research Analyst / Computer Scientist in the Strategy Division (RWS), Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis Branch (RWSA) at Eglin AFB, in Valparaiso, Florida.  This is a multidisciplinary position and may be filled at either series.  The ideal candidate will have experience in:  COCOM and MAJCOM operational / tabletop exercises and wargames; be familiar with the exercise planning cycle and the planning conferences, Mission Essential Tasks (METLs); know the fundamental exercise terminology i.e., White Cell, EXCON, Blue Flag, Senior Mentors, etc.  Previous exercise/wargaming expertise, previous campaign modeling & simulation, previous S&E experience, and/or operational experience highly desired.   

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as Munitions Directorate and Strategy Division Lead for Wargaming.
  • In cooperation with strategic and capability planning personnel and weapons enterprise partners, identify and define concepts for integration into wargames, exercises and simulation.
  • Activities may include both exercises and demonstrations through the use of live, virtual and constructive simulation. 
  • Use knowledge of the science of mechanical, electrical, and aeronautical engineering to ensure weapons concepts have the proper level of fidelity in targeting, navigation, guidance, warhead and airframe subsystems.
  • Serve as consultant and advisor on mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering issues with concepts.
  • Participate in wargame planning with AFRL/HQ, MAJCOM personnel, HAF, and others and ensure RW concepts are adequately represented.
  • Collect and maintain data on concepts, verify the level of rigor in analysis of concepts and attributes, recommend additional analysis and catalogue results.
  • Maintain descriptions of both historical and current RW weapon concepts.
  • Advise senior management on wargame participation and concepts to be played.
  • Work with other organizations to develop "joint concepts" to play in wargames.
  • Publish and present reports on each wargame RW participates in and ensure feedback from wargames related to weapons concepts is captured in an RW knowledge base and decision-making tools.
  • Make recommendations to Capability Area Planners and Senior planners.
  • Maintain knowledge of critical technology lists, sensitivity of concepts related to wargame implementation, and other security drivers.
  • Assist management with ensuring security protocols are followed.

  • Must be eligible for and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • This position is a Drug Testing position.
  • This is a Non-Critical APDP position requiring Level I Foundational Certification in Engineering and Technical Management (N).  The selectee must meet, or be capable of achieving the APDP certification as designed on the position description within the defined grace period for that certification level after assignment.  Applicant must list all completed acquisition certifications on resume.
  • Applicants must possess 52 weeks of experience at the next lower grade (or equivalent) for consideration.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with COCOM/MAJCOM Exercise/Wargaming as a planner highly desired.
  • Previous Blue Flag experience highly desired.
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense research community and operational experience highly desired. 
  • Experience working as part of an integrated process team (IPT) highly desired.
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited school is desired.
