      Position Duties include; but are not limited to:

      • Peforms research and other professional and scientific work involving the application of knowledge of the visual functions of humans and/or animals, both in the whole organism and at the cellular or molecular level under normal and abnormal conditions. 
      • Performs analysis and uses systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to develop, execute, and manage projects related to optical radiation bioeffects of the visual system, from ultraviolet to near-Infrared wavelengths.
      • Utilizes experience and knowledge of military operational needs and scenarios to determine physiological objectives to assess ocular health and visual performance, develop and evaluate alternatives, design and conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret results.
      • Serves as Vision Consultant for the Tri-Service Laser Incident Hotline and/or other laser incident reports and uses advanced knowledge of laser bioeffects on the visual system to participate in international panels on laser use and ocular laser safety. 
      • Evaluates DoD and US strategies and imperatives and reviews, evaluates, and recommends ocular and physiological assessment resources and designs to meet current and future needs of AFRL.
      • Leads and collaborates on interdisciplinary teams that interact, coordinate, consult and collaborate directly with military and civilian scientists within AFRL, as well as representatives from national and international organizations. 
      • Prepares research results for presentation either in written form in scientific periodicals or technical reports or as oral presentations at national and international conferences and meetings. Participates in the preparation and defense of animal and/or human research protocols. Develops, publishes, and manages topics for federal research programs, where appropriate.

      • This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.
      • Security Clearance: This position is Secret Non-Critical position. 
      • This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position. The selectee will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained Education General Schedule Qualification Standards (opm.gov)

      SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience at the next lower grade of position being advertised, or equivalent in other pay systems.

      Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the next lower grade is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements. TIG applies if you are in a current federal position or held a federal position within the previous 52 weeks.

      • 4th generation computer coding/laboratory systems design experience: MATLAB, Python, etc.

      • Human-Use experimental design & protocol development experience.

      • Advanced statistical analysis experience.

      • Laser systems/optical design experience, including laser dazzle generation and application.

      • Ocular Physiology and visual pathway expertise

      • Strong communication skills with experience working in multi-disciplinary and international collaborative environments.
